Sonko is said to have bribed the journalists including Swaleh Mdoe, Mwanahamisi Hamadi, Kimeli Arap Kimeli, Yusuf Ali and Shisia Wasilwa to " kill" a story in which he had been attacked and chased by a group of voters in the area over bribery claims.
Sonko denied the allegations and said they are part of efforts by city politicians to taint his image.
"These politicians are afraid of me and now they are instigating the suspension of my friends at the station. We shall defend them," he said.
The journalists were suspended for ten days by managing director Faridah Karonei in letters to each of them after a probe.
In the ten days, further probe will be conducted before they come to face the charges. Meanwhile, for the next 10 days, Kanze Dena and Lulu Hassan, who mostly appear on TV on weekends, will be in charge of the Citizen Nipashe news.
